The mighty Mississippi River travels through ten states of America. We will spend most of our journey in Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana. The food, the music and the history will inspire you. We will tour the legendary Graceland in Memphis, the battlefield of Vicksburg National Military Park and finish our journey in New Orleans. Join the tutor for travel tips, where to stay, sightseeing and where to find the best food in town.

Your Tutor is Margo Christey

Margo has been teaching with the WEA since 2026.

With more than 27 years in the travel industry, Margo brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and a genuine passion for exploring the world.  Her career has included 16 years with Qantas International, followed by roles with Jetstar and Norwegian Cruise Line.  Having travelled extensively herself, Margo enjoys sharing not only the destinations but also the stories, history, culture and personal experiences that bring each place to life.

Margo holds a Bachelor of Business Administration, a Certificate III in Travel and Tourism, and has completed specialist certification with a range of leading river and ocean cruise companies.

Course Description

Follow the course of one of the world's greatest rivers and discover the history, culture and music that have shaped America's Deep South. 

Travelling through Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana, this fascinating course explores the communities, landscapes and traditions found along the mighty Mississippi River. 

From the birthplace of blues and country music to Civil War battlefields, bourbon country and vibrant river towns, you'll gain a deeper appreciation of this iconic region and the people who call it home.

Journey to legendary destinations including Graceland in Memphis, Vicksburg National Military Park, the Natchez Trace Parkway and the lively streets of New Orleans. 

Along the way, you'll discover the region's unique cuisine, musical heritage, rich history and spectacular scenery while receiving practical travel advice on accommodation, driving holidays, river cruising and where to experience the best local food. 

Whether you're planning a trip or simply love exploring the world from home, this course offers an engaging introduction to one of America's most fascinating regions.

Course Structure

This engaging course combines history, travel experiences and practical planning advice to provide a comprehensive introduction to the Mississippi River and the American South. 

Students will explore the geography, history and culture of the region while travelling through Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana. 

Along the journey, the course highlights significant historical sites, scenic drives, music, food and local traditions, including Graceland, the Great River Road, Vicksburg National Military Park, the Natchez Trace Parkway and the vibrant culture of New Orleans. 

Throughout the course, students will also receive practical recommendations for accommodation, dining, river cruising and self-drive itineraries to help plan a memorable journey.

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Understand the history, geography and cultural significance of the Mississippi River
  • Recognise the unique attractions and experiences offered by the Southern states along the river
  • Appreciate the musical heritage of Memphis, Nashville and New Orleans
