Course Description

French 4 is designed for students with three years of prior French study, ready to move beyond beginner-level skills and enjoy a year of deeper engagement with the language through conversation, light grammar, and a strong focus on French culture. 

Using the Alter Ego+A2 textbook series, this course allows students to continue building fluency and confidence while exploring rich cultural themes such as relationships, work life, food, and travel. 

Whether you're preparing for a trip, maintaining your language skills, or simply enjoying the beauty of French, this course offers a lively and supportive environment for growth.

Through guided class discussions, structured exercises, and cultural immersion, students will learn to express themselves more naturally in everyday situations. 

A mix of listening, speaking, reading and writing activities helps reinforce vocabulary, improve pronunciation, and strengthen comprehension. 

Light grammar support is provided to clarify key language structures and deepen understanding. 

This course aims to make learning French enjoyable and effective, while celebrating the diversity and richness of Francophone cultures.

Course Structure

This course follows a thematic approach, using engaging units to practice conversation, introduce new vocabulary, and explore French culture in context.

Unit 1: I Have Relationships!

  • Linguistic goals: Use of relative pronouns, review of the passé composé with "être" and agreement of the past participle
  • Pragmatic goals: Talk about a friendship, describe a person's character
  • Cultural goals: Understand social customs related to friendships in France

Unit 2: At Work!

  • Linguistic goals: Use of past tenses (imparfait, passé composé)
  • Pragmatic goals: Talk about professional experience
  • Cultural goals: Discover the specifics of the job market in France

Unit 3: Enjoy Your Meal!

  • Linguistic goals: Expressions to express tastes and preferences, vocabulary of cooking and food
  • Pragmatic goals: Talk about eating habits, express opinions about a dish
  • Cultural goals: Explore French gastronomy and its traditions

Unit 4: Travel, Travel

  • Linguistic goals: Use of the near future and present conditional, vocabulary of travel and transportation
  • Pragmatic goals: Prepare a trip, talk about a travel experience
  • Cultural goals: Discover Francophone destinations and their particularities

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Participate confidently in conversations on a variety of everyday topics
  • Use past, future, and conditional tenses to talk about experiences and plans
  • Describe people, relationships, and character traits in French

Course Prerequisites

This course is designed for students with prior knowledge of French at an intermediate level, or who have completed WEA French 3 or an equivalent course.
