Line dancing is a unique form of dance. No partner is needed, yet it can be as complex as any form of Ballroom Dancing, should you wish to search for a challenge. This class is intended to introduce you to the fundamental terminology and actions to enable you to get a feel for the activity. You will learn several dance routines each session, with some repetition from session to session to train both your brain and muscle memory. Line Dancers of South Australia started in 1993 and have conducted line dance classes throughout the metropolitan and regional areas ever since.
Line Dancing for Beginners
Course Description
This beginner-friendly course will teach students the basics of line dance, including key terms, body movements, and dancing to music, all in a relaxed, low-impact setting.
No partner is needed, and no previous dance experience is required. Line dancing is a fun way to stay active, keep your mind and body engaged, and improve your overall health in a social setting.
You’ll learn a series of choreographed routines that slowly introduce you to the world of line dancing. The music will include a mix of Country, Pop, Latin, and International styles. Each dance will be taught step-by-step and gradually sped up so you can fully enjoy the dance experience.
Course Structure
Each class will consist of 3 or 4 dances, some of which will be repeated the following week. It is a participation course, not a theoretical one, and being able to stand and move unaided is necessary.
Some turning is required, but it will be gradual and in small amounts, so vertigo or balance should not be an issue.
Elements (movements) of each dance will be “recycled” in other subsequent dances, building a knowledge of the standard vocabulary of terms for “easy level” line dancing.
It is recommended you bring a small notebook (or use your phone) to document the names of the dances you experience, in case you would like to request them in a subsequent session, if time permits. No notes are provided.
Layered clothing is recommended, so you can peel off a layer should you get overheated (it is exercise after all). No high heels, as balance on one foot may be required at various stages.
Please bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated.
Teaching will be conducted in English, but the actions can be learned visually, if language is a concern.

Barbara commenced at the WEA in 2025.
Barbara has practiced as an Osteopath since 1996, where she has developed a passion for health, wellbeing and movement. She loves the idea that music and dancing can be a way of moving our bodies easily and anyone of any age, with any-skill level, can give it a go. It provides for mobility, balance, encouraging brain plasticity whilst creating a joyful environment
Barbara started line dancing in 2005, had a break while raising her children and working in her career before returning in 2020.
She has been trained by ‘Line Dancers of SA’, who have been teaching, dancing and leading line dancing for over 30 years. They are internationally recognised, have choreographed many line dances and have represented South Australia in Tamworth over multiple years.
Barbara has been teaching her own classes since 2023 and is currently undertaking her next level accreditation.
