Course Description
Discover the fundamentals of interior decorating in this engaging and practical six-week introductory course.
Designed for beginners and home styling enthusiasts, this interactive course explores how colour, furniture, lighting and accessories work together to create spaces that are both beautiful and functional.
You’ll learn how to make confident decorating choices that reflect your personal style while enhancing the way a space is used.
Across weekly sessions, you’ll build practical skills through hands-on activities, mood boards and real-world examples.
Guided by core design principles, you’ll gain the confidence to transform any room, whether refreshing a single space or planning a whole home.
No prior experience is required, just curiosity and enthusiasm for creating inviting interiors.

Course Structure
The course begins by introducing the key principles of interior decorating and helping you identify your own design preferences.
You’ll then explore colour theory and how to create harmonious palettes that influence mood and atmosphere.
As the weeks progress, you’ll learn how to plan spaces effectively, select appropriate furniture and materials, and work with scale and proportion to improve flow and functionality.
Later sessions focus on lighting and accessorising, showing how layered lighting and thoughtful styling can elevate a space.
The course concludes by bringing everything together as you develop a complete room concept using a mood board and styling plan, with the opportunity to share ideas and receive supportive feedback.

Suzanne Phillips BA (VA) has been teaching at WEA since 2023.
Suzanne has many interests and loves Sweden, where she was born and lived for 18 years. She has studied the equivalent of year twelve in the Swedish language. She has also studied Swedish to English translation at the University of Halmstad. During her 18 years in Sweden, she taught English from the Swedish language and gave private tutoring.
Her interests include Scandinavian design, singing, photography, fashion and she is a historical re-enactor of the Viking Age!
Suzanne works as a multi-talented designer, photographer, interior decorator, graphic designer, fashion designer and textile designer.
