Simple Car Maintenance is the perfect hands-on introduction for anyone who wants to better understand how their car works and how to keep it running smoothly. 

This course is designed for drivers with little or no mechanical experience who want to save money, extend the life of their vehicle, and feel more in control when something goes wrong. 

You’ll learn how to identify key components, understand how they function, and carry out basic servicing tasks with confidence.

Through a mix of lectures, demonstrations, discussions, and practical exercises, you'll explore everything from the engine and ignition systems to brakes, electrics, and bodywork. 

The course also covers preventative maintenance and economical driving habits. 

By the end of the course, you’ll be equipped with essential skills and knowledge to handle common issues, maintain your car’s performance, and communicate more effectively with mechanics.

Course Structure

Week 1: Introduction, course overview, and discussion of car ownership basics

Week 2: The motor – dismantling, reassembling, identifying problems and simple remedies

Week 3: Understanding car electrics – circuits, symbols, and common issues

Week 4: Ignition systems – traditional and modern developments

Week 5: Fuel and cooling systems – carburation and temperature control

Week 6: Transmission systems – gearbox, clutch, and differential explained

Week 7: Brakes and suspension – function, faults, and basic checks

Week 8: Car bodywork – rust prevention and basic care; driving tips for fuel efficiency

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify the main components of a motor vehicle and understand their function
  • Dismantle and reassemble basic engine components
  • Understand and troubleshoot simple electrical and ignition systems
