You’ll be guided through camera basics—from understanding settings like aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, to mastering exposure and composition—with clear demonstrations and hands-on practice. Through a balance of clear explanations, hands-on practice and inspiring field sessions, you’ll develop both the technical skills and the creative eye needed to capture images with confidence.

What you’ll learn:

By the end of the course, you will:

  • Confidently set up and operate your DSLR camera.
  • Understand the exposure triangle (aperture, shutter speed, ISO) and how to use it in different conditions.
  • Control focus, depth of field and light to achieve the effects you want.
  • Apply basic composition techniques.
  • Experiment with natural and flash lighting to add mood and dimension to your shots.
  • Understanding simple post-processing to enhance your photos in software.

Two outdoor field sessions (e.g. at sunrise and sunset) give you real-world shooting experience under expert guidance. By the end of the course, you’ll feel confident using your camera—and be able to create a selection of expressive, well-composed photographs that capture your unique vision.

Requirements

  • A digital SLR camera with its manual.
  • At least one interchangeable lens (e.g. a standard zoom or a prime lens).
  • A camera flash (built-in or external).
  • Access to a computer with photo editing software (not required in class, but recommended for practice at home).
  • A tripod (optional, but helpful for night photography).

By the end of the course, you’ll have not only a strong understanding of how to use your camera, but also a collection of images that reflect your growth and creativity. Whether you’re picking up your DSLR for the first time or refreshing your skills, this course offers a complete, practical foundation to help you capture the world with confidence.

Your Tutor is Elena Pochesneva

From 2024, Elena Pochesneva has been sharing her expertise through her course, "Capture with a Digital SLR Photo Camera," at WEA South Australia.

Elena's passion for photography was ignited during her school years when she discovered the magic of black-and-white film. ‘I believe that through photography I could share the beauty of nature and humans, bring positive emotions into peoples’ lives and inspire people to appreciate the world around them. – Elena said, - It's an endless chance to explore the depth of our surroundings and share these impressions with others’.

As a photographer, Elena has experience in hosting personal exhibitions and participating in group exhibitions.
