You’ll learn how to select the right waxes, wicks, and containers, measure and add fragrance oils correctly, and add colours to personalise your candles. With step-by-step guidance and expert tips, you’ll also learn how to calculate wax and fragrance quantities to suit different vessels.
Taught in a fun, friendly, and relaxed environment, this course is perfect for beginners.
The first session focuses on building foundational skills while creating a variety of candles using supplied materials. In the second session, you'll bring your own containers and apply what you've learned to make custom candles with the support of the tutor.
By the end of the course, you'll leave with your own hand-poured candles and the confidence to continue your candle-making journey at home.
Course Structure
In week 1, students are introduced to the fundamentals of soy wax candle making. The session begins with an overview of wax types, wick sizes, fragrances, colouring, and essential safety tips. Students are shown how to measure wax and fragrance accurately and how to pour at the correct temperatures. Under guidance, students will create a 200g glass container candle, a 170g tin candle with a wooden wick, two containers of fragrant melts, and four tea lights. All materials for this session are included in the course fee.
In week 2, students bring in their own containers to make personalised candles. The session starts with a discussion on advanced topics like moulds, different wax types, and common candle-making challenges. Participants apply what they’ve learned to make new candles, with wax, wicks, and fragrances supplied at cost by the tutor. This week allows for more creativity, problem-solving, and refining of skills in a supportive environment. Attendance at Week 1 is essential to gain the knowledge required for Week 2.

Shane delivered training to groups for thirty years. When he retired in 2017 he took up candle making as a hobby. Teaching at WEA allows him to combine his two interests of training and candle making.
