WEA: Adult Learning
TIMING THE FINANCIAL MARKETS
Money And Finance
Stock Market

Cycles exist in financial markets. This course looks at cycles and their behaviour and moves on to teach you how to locate longer term cycles. We will then investigate how to utilise cycle knowledge to time investment entries and exits. If your approach is not working for you, the knowledge related to TIME contained in this course may be the KEY you are missing. No prior experience required. Please note your email address will be shared with the Tutor Prior to course

This course is available as a WEA Flexi course.

When you enrol in a WEA Flexi course, you have the option of attending each session in person or online via Zoom. You do not need to nominate a preference when you enrol, you can simply attend each session in person or online as it suits you.

Zoom is a popular video conferencing software solution which can be used as a virtual classroom. For an optimal online learning experience, when attending classes via Zoom we recommend you install Zoom Workplace on a desktop or laptop computer with built-in webcam and use a headset with microphone. Alternatively, there is a Zoom Workplace app available so you can participate using a tablet or smartphone, however you may not be able to experience all aspects of the online learning environment when participating this way.

When you enrol in a WEA Flexi course, you will receive an email with a Zoom meeting link at least two days before the course starts. If you don’t see the email in your inbox, please check your spam folder or junk mail. If you have not received the email with the Zoom meeting details, please contact us and we will provide the details you need to join the session online.

To join the course session via Zoom, simply click on the Join the Meeting link in the email or click on Join Meeting in the Zoom app and insert the Meeting ID, your name and Passcode in the boxes provided.

Please note: WEA can only provide limited technical support (such as re-sending the meeting details), as students should know how to use Zoom on their computer or device if choosing to attend this way.

Course Description

Understanding when to buy or sell can be just as important as knowing what to trade.

Timing the Financial Markets introduces students to the often-overlooked concept of market cycles – recurring patterns of time that influence price movement.

This course explores how long- and short-term cycles can be identified, measured, and used to improve timing in both trading and investing.

You’ll learn how to analyse market rhythm, recognise predictable turning points, and use timing as a powerful complement to your existing strategy.

We’ll examine research by cycle theorists such as Edward Dewey, dive into the structure of cycles (period, amplitude, and orb), and apply these ideas to real market examples.

With practical instruction on how to spot, validate, and apply cycle patterns, students will gain tools to better forecast trends and make more confident decisions.

If your current method lacks the “when,” this course may provide the key piece you’ve been missing.

Course Structure

This course is delivered in a structured lecture format, broken down into key topic areas that build foundational knowledge while allowing for real-time questions and interactive discussion.

  • What market cycles are and why they matter
  • Common terminology: trends, timing vs time in, long/short positions
  • Definitions and features of cycles (period, amplitude, orb)
  • Edward Dewey’s cycle research and synchrony across markets
  • How to spot and measure market cycles reliably
  • Techniques for aligning with short- and long-term cycles
  • Cycle translation (left/right) and trend phasing
  • Applying cycle knowledge to chart patterns and price behaviour
  • Building, testing, and refining a cycle-based trading plan
  • Using cycle tools to analyse today’s market and forecast tomorrow’s.

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Explain why cycles occur in financial markets and how they influence prices
  • Use correct terminology to describe trends, timing, and cycle behaviour
  • Recognise and interpret market cycles using key variables like period and amplitude
  • Understand Edward Dewey’s contribution to cycle theory and common cycle intervals
  • Identify bullish and bearish signals using cycle translation and phasing
  • Connect cycle patterns to familiar chart formations and price actions
