This course is designed for beginners who have basic Japanese knowledge equivalent to the WEA "Japanese 1" course. The course follows the textbook ‘Japanese for Busy People 1 (4th Edition, preferably Kana Version, not Romanised Version) and covers the second half of the textbook (Lesson 13 – Lesson 24).

Course Description

This course is designed to give students an introduction to the Japanese language and culture.

It is suitable for beginners and those with a little knowledge from other courses such as the WEA Japanese 1 course. 

The course focuses on conversational practise and covers lessons 13 to 24 of the prescribed textbook. In addition to the textbook exercises, the course takes an activities-based communicative approach integrating language learning and cultural information. It includes:

  • Conversation and role play with the teacher and fellow students
  • Reading and writing
  • Visual images and aural work 
  • Grammatical explanations
  • Exercises, card games, and language games

Course Structure

The course will cover the following lessons:

Lesson 13 – Asking for a place: How many things are there?

Lesson 14 – Giving and receiving: I received (what) from (whom) for (occasion).

Lesson 15 – Talking about preferences: I like cats. I like singing. Dictionary form.

Lesson 16 – Making an invitation: There is a festival in Asakusa. Shall we go together?   

Lesson 17 – Stating a wish: ‘I want to (eg; eat sushi, buy a souvenir, go to Japan, etc)’

Lesson 18 – Explaining a plan: I will go to Osaka to see Mr Suzuki after the meeting.

Lesson 19 – Making a request: Please say it one more time. Please wait.  

Lesson 20 – Going places: How do you go to Shibuya?  

Lesson 21 – Asking permission: May I have it?

Lesson 22 – Forbidding actions: Please don’t take photos.

Lesson 23 – Explaining actions: What are you doing now? I am eating my lunch. 

Lesson 24 – Work and interest: I work for a bank. My hobby is reading history books.

Course Learning Outcomes

This introductory course will enable students to communicate in Japanese at a basic level, and improve students’ comprehensive ability to speak, listen to and read Japanese scripts in Hiragana and Katakana.

By the end of the course students should be able to carry out everyday conversations in Japanese. Students who complete the course may wish to continue their learning by enrolling in Japanese 3.

Your Tutor is Nobue Kume

Nobue Kume has been teaching at WEA since 2016. 

Nobue was born and raised in Tokyo and has been teaching Japanese at primary and high schools in Australia for more than ten years. 

For the past eight years Nobue has also been working with adults at night at WEA, and enjoys sharing her knowledge of Japanese language and culture with people in Australia.
