Wines of Italy

Course Description

Dive into the heart of Italian winemaking in this exciting course that explores the iconic wine regions of Italy.

You’ll taste and evaluate wines from celebrated areas such as Piedmont, Tuscany, Veneto, Puglia, Abruzzi, and Sicily, each known for its unique terroir and winemaking traditions.

From the structured reds of Barolo and Barbaresco to the bright whites of Arneis and Vermentino, this course offers a comprehensive exploration of Italy's diverse wine styles.

Experience the original expressions of native Italian grape varieties like Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Montepulciano, and Nero d'Avola, many of which are now being vinified in Australia with impressive results.

As you taste these wines, you’ll learn about the history, culture, and winemaking techniques that shape each region’s distinct styles. Your tutor will help you understand how Italian wines reflect the country’s varied landscapes, climates, and traditions.

This course is an excellent way to deepen your knowledge of Italy’s wine legacy while discovering how these classic grapes are flourishing in the New World.

Whether you’re a wine enthusiast or just beginning your wine journey, this course will expand your palate and appreciation for this rich and diverse wine culture.

Over the course of three hours, you’ll taste three wines per hour – equivalent to one standard drink per hour. While this is generally considered a moderate pace, it’s important to understand that everyone metabolises alcohol differently, and individual tolerance levels can vary.

Please note that participants must be aged 18 or over to attend this course.

Course Structure

The session begins with a warm welcome and a brief introduction to your tutor, along with an overview of what to expect during the course. From there, you'll be guided through key information about the featured wine regions, including their signature grape varieties, styles, and production methods.

Your tutor will then demonstrate a simple yet effective method for evaluating wine, which you’ll use throughout the class. Working individually or in small groups, you’ll taste a variety of wines, apply the evaluation method, and share your observations in open discussions.

To support your learning, you’ll receive a concise set of notes summarising the key concepts covered. There will be plenty of time for questions and conversation throughout the session.
