Tour Guiding – We Need You!

Course Description

If you’ve ever dreamed of sharing your passion for history, culture, or storytelling with others, becoming a tour guide can be a deeply rewarding and exciting career path or side hustle.

This introductory course provides the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to begin your journey in the tourism industry.

You’ll learn what it means to be a tour guide, how to research and prepare engaging tours, and how to deliver commentary that captivates and informs your audience.

Tour guiding offers flexible work opportunities, the chance to meet new people, and the satisfaction of bringing places to life through stories and experiences.

Designed to prepare students for entry into the workforce, the course also encourages gaining real-world experience through observation with professional guides, which we can help arrange.

Course Structure

The course includes five classroom sessions at the WEA Centre, featuring presentations, interactive activities, and guest speakers from the tourism industry.

As the course progresses, students will also complete two practical assignments: a walking tour in Adelaide and a coach tour from the city to Outer Harbor and back.

Along the way, you’ll explore various tour formats – including walking, coach, and extended tours – while developing your research and storytelling skills.

Course Learning Outcomes

After completing this course students will:

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a tour guide
  • Learn how to research and prepare content for tours
  • Identify different types of tours and their unique requirements
  • Develop effective storytelling and public speaking techniques
  • Gain practical experience in leading and planning guided tours
