Indonesian Batik has been declared a masterpiece of intangible human heritage by UNESCO. Batik Tulis is a wax resist method of textile printing. Make a unique scarf for yourself or a loved one. Suitable for beginners. Course fee includes majority of materials and use of equipment which is supplied by the tutor. You can purchase an extra batik kit for $35 on the day.

Course Description

This course is designed to give students an introduction to Indonesian batik printing and various types of batik.

This 4-hour hands-on class will teach you the batik tulis technique with the help of brush painting and the tjanting tool. 

You'll learn how to draw or trace your design on fabric, followed by wax painting, dyeing and the finishing steps. 

You will be able to take notes and also be given a link to a pre-recorded tutorial so you can create more pieces at home after the course.

Course Structure

In this hands-on session the tutor will guide you through the following steps:

  • Introduction and overview of the cultural heritage, types and technique of batik printing.
  • Develop and draw or trace your design on fabric.
  • Paint your design with hot beeswax with the help of the brush and the tjanting tool.
  • Dyeing your fabric to achieve the final look.
  • Taking notes for de-waxing your fabric after 24 hours and finishing it into a scarf or tapestry.

Course Learning Outcomes

After completing this introductory course, students will be able to:

  • Trace the design on fabric.
  • Wax paint the design on fabric using the brush and tjanting tool. 
  • Recognise different types of dyes and carry out the dyeing process. 
  • Cure the fabric.
  • De-wax and finish the fabric into a usable scarf, wall hanging, cushion or table runner.

Course Requirements

Please bring an apron, a plastic bag, and reading glasses if required.

The course fee includes all other materials and use of the equipment supplied by the tutor.

You are welcome to purchase an additional DIY batik kit from the tutor on the day, for future use. The kit costs $38 payable directly to the tutor by cash or PayID and contains three assorted dyes, wax cake and instructions, with a QR code linked to the DIY video.
