Patchwork Quilting for Beginners

Course Description

This course is designed to give students an introduction to the wonderful world of patchwork quilting.

We start with the basics of patchwork and expose the student to the fun of joining squares, then cutting, rearranging and stitching back together to produce an amazing piece of art.

As the weeks progress, students will learn the standard terms and procedures of different aspects of patchwork quilting.

The difficulty and complexity of some processes will be increased gradually, and the course allows for further exploration of students’ individual interests as well as:

  • Sharing quilting ideas with the teacher and fellow students.
  • Learning about colour, texture and weight of different fabrics and their uses.
  • Use of the different quilting tools, waddings and backings for quilts.
  • Learning the QAYG (Quilt As You Go) method of straight sewing to quilt on a domestic machine.
  • Basic quilting samples and printed instructions for future use.
  • Inspiration for making quilts with greater degrees of difficulty and the pattern instructions for doing so.

Course Structure

Week 1: An introduction to the Disappearing 9 Patch Quilt, plus choosing and cutting fabrics.

Week 2: Assembly of the ‘First Pass’ of the basic Disappearing 9 Patch Quilt.

Week 3: Cutting and reassembly of the First Pass (now called the ‘Flimsy’).

Week 4: Adding borders to the Flimsy and adding wadding and a backing to create a Quilt Sandwich.

Week 5: Stitch QAYG to whole quilt.

Week 6: Add label and binding to complete your quilt.

Course Learning Outcomes

This basic quilting course will enable students to understand the fundamentals of quilting, including the tools and other aids and fabrics that are used in the process.

By the end of the course students should be able to recognise the different pattern elements that they can see in store-sold quilts or quilt designs as shown on Pinterest and other popular quilt sites on the internet.

Students should realistically finish the course with a completed approximately 150cm square quilt they have made.

Course Requirements

Students will be required to bring:

  • Your own sewing machine with foot control and power lead – you must be confident using this.
  • A sewing kit containing fabric scissors, small thread cutting scissors, quick unpick, 3 metre quilters tape measure, bobbins and reel thread, metal ruler, and pin holder. These types of kits are available at Spotlight and are sometimes available at Big W or Kmart.
  • 170cm wadding – this is also available for purchase from the tutor at $10 per metre.
  • Backing fabric – you will be given more information about this requirement at the first session.

An optional basic patchwork kit of 9 Fat Quarters with different colour options is available for purchase from the tutor for $20. Please bring cash.
